Disc Golf in New Zealand

2011 Smokin' Mountain

Smokin' Mountain 2011 Disc Golf Tour Event

Oct.29 & 30 Discovery Lodge National Park | NZDG Tour event number 11 .. TD Des Cooper

Disc Golf New Zealand
Discover My World - Tournament Director Des Cooper put on a great 2 days of golf and get-together for over 25 golfers.

The snow clad slopes of Mt Ruapehu remained hidden behind a sheltering sky of its own making.  Mt Tongariro and  Mt Ngauruhoe cleared their flanks to tower over the curious band of plastic flingers that gathered to compete in the 2011 Smokin’ Mountain round of the NZ Disc Golf Tour.

TD Des Cooper co-opted National Champion Blair Joines of Taumarunui to redesign the course of previous years and a longer, trickier 18 holes emerged.   The course took advantage of the unusual hillocks that dot the paddocks and the mature trees that grow on them. The combination of slopes and obstacles provided a solid test of thrower’s skills in bending  to all directions and over various lengths.  The same features also ensured heartbreak as promising throws were thwarted by 50/50 admission foliage or ruined by rollers (it seemed for Nick it was 20/80! - ed.).

Disc Golf New ZealandPossibly unaware of these ‘improvements’ a strong field gathered in calm and comfortable conditions.  From Levin the Sullivans arrived with Gemma and Jackson looking ready to threaten their divisions.  Carson Boone came north with his powerful arm in search of honours.  From the Central North Island Blair Joines, Pete Boyle and Des Cooper set out to prove steady accurate play could overcome youthful exuberance.  From the north the tour upstart Brad Muir arrived to further his claim as the best new player on tour.   Simon Feasey complained he had eaten too well having stayed Friday night with Pete and Corynne at Taumarunui but turned up looking relaxed and ominously ready to swat away the challengers.  Simon’s decision to play as a Master rather than in the Open field pleased and disappointed in equal measure ("you were beaten by an old fella?!").

Unlike many tournaments on tour this one would have no super six would be played out over 4 full rounds.  Time to stretch the legs and arms.  Juan Unda using high tech gadgerty found a player could walk 6.3 k’s in a round.  (that did include some frantic pacing in search of vanished plastic which rivalled Picnic at Hanging Rock for outright mystery - a better player could expect less, in fact Muir clocked under 3km!!!).

And so day one played out with mild conditions and a modest north west wind.  There were few surprised when over the two rounds Simon Feasey took then consolidated the lead.  Blair Joines tested his injured leg and found it passable.  Carson Boone and Pete Boyle displayed consistent form in matching Simon in scoring two sub 60 rounds.  Day two saw superb conditions for a course that can throw sleet at competitors.  Scores improved for most players with low 50’s in the offering for quality play.  Simon set a new (new) course record with his 49 in the third round.  His apparently effortless drives to 125 meter pins a delight to watch.

Highlights for your correspondent were varied but included Gemma’s delight in discovering she had matched her Dad in competition (I suspect Dad was quietly pleased for her too).  Shane had a handsome outing exemplified by his birdie studded fourth round.  Shane’s pleasure was no doubt amplified further in knowing his son had won the open division.  Also notable for their endeavours were Jymi Best who displayed his skills with a hot third round of 53.  The round included a bogey save of 20 plus meters on hole 9 that took some courage as the shot was sailing 20 meters further if it hadn’t found chains.

Brad Muir showed his second at Christchurch was no flash in the pan as he played solid golf to finish with a commendable 5th place including a useful 53 on the third round.

So congratuations all the division winners, Gemma Sullivan, Jackson Sullivan, Simon Feasey and Blair Joines.  Well done to all those who attended and played with the respect and humour that makes our game fine.  And thanks again to TD Des Cooper for hosting yet another highlight on the disc golf calendar.

Story thanks to player Nigel 'Waiheke' Hailstone

The Pictures

Disc Golf New Zealand
Welcome to Discovery Lodge Disc Golf Course - Located by Highway 46 at the foot of mighty Mt Ruapehu, the Smokin' Mountain Disc Golf course winds from the lodge west of the mountain. Many of the course's baskets sit upon small mounds of earth (plug domes or 'kames') with pre-historic like trees - opening the way for many a cruel roller. You can see a map of a player's round here. This particular player travelled a bit of ground - see if you can see where a disc was lost and the player returned to the tee to throw again.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Joines the Dots - Battling a knee injury (that ain't no fibula - ed), local favourite Blair Joines (Piriaka) tweaked his game well enough for a well deserved third place. Here Joines lets rip on hole 10.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Supreme Athletes Unlimited - Riki Elston (Levin) slots another birdie in a fine Round 2 61 before having to head back home for work, missing Sunday's play. With form like this, the Waitere Wonderboy would have been in the running for podium position.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Meeting - Simon Feasey (Auckland, centre) awaits instructions from TD Des Cooper before heading out to slaughter the course.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Birdie Bob - Hole 1 and another birdie for the master of precision, the king of kaching, the Grand Master himself Bob Gentil (Birkenhead).

Disc Golf New Zealand
Slick Nick - One player you couldn't miss no matter where on the course was regular tour player Nick McKay (Auckland) in his trademark orange shorts. The champion soccer playing was well pleased with his 60 in Round 3.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Discover Discovery - even if you aren't playing golf there, Discovery Lodge is a great place to enjoy all the fun and adventure of the Volcanic Plateau. Check them out at www.discovery.net.nz

Disc Golf New Zealand
Bouncy Castle - Trying desperately to find a birdie, Nick McKay (Auckland) is cruley denied via a bouncer on hole 7.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Golfers Golfers, Everywhere - Levin mastermind Shane Sullivan surveys 2 other groups looking across towards the tees for holes 2 and 13.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Simple as AB C - Hole 6 and Abe Hartley (Levin) fires another strong drive watched by his fellow golfers.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Round the Outside - Like a true Buffalo Girl, Bob Gentil (Auckland) had to go round the outside. And with good reason - The Rock of hole seven. And true to his skills, the GM slotted it for another birdie.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Downhill Slide - these are the tricky ones: the downhill putts. But they don't call him Tricky Riki for nothing (in fact they don't call him Tricky Riki at all - ed.).

Disc Golf New Zealand
Mexican Madness - Mexican golfer Juan Unda (Tijuana) attempted to continue his 2-discs only policy, but that went out the door in Round 3 after losing his yellow Eagle out in the open after what looked like a great drive on hole 6 heading towards 'The Forest' section (pictured). The earth just gobbled it up! Fortunately the Latino Loony had a spare Eagle in his sombrero and continued on if somewhat despondent.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Volcanic Reflection - Levin's poster boy Abe Hartley watches another golfer putt as other golfers traverse the course in the background. The cone shaped volcano is Mt Ngauruhoe, a cone that has erupted as recently as 1977.

Disc Golf New Zealand
'Levin' Nothing to Chance - Hole 1 was considered by many as a Aceable hole. But no Aces were recorded in the tournament. Here Riki Elston (Levin) in unable to pick up the birdie watched by fellow Levinite Shane Sullivan.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Wonders of Nature - With Mt Ngauruhoe as a backdrop, Shane Sullivan (Levin) reflects on what might be next for his battle to stay ahead of leading womens player and daughter Gemma.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Leap of Faith - Auckland golfer Mike Proctor gives his disc that extra flight needed to reach the pin on hole 11.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Easy Does It - Hole 17 has a very tricky approach into the green, further threatening by a nasty swampy creek in the background. Here Hana Robertson (National Park?) gently guides her disc in for an easy putt.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Take that Tree! - Under early morning cloud cover Pete Boyle (Taumarunui) tees of on hole 11 in the top group without even losing the bag. Boyle was one of only 3 players to stay under 60 for all four rounds - wicked.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Snagged - the trees around the course were amazing. A tree that looks dead and finished then anchors its branches into the ground to become roots and it all starts over again. LIke the NZ Disc Golf Tour.

Disc Golf New Zealand
The Rock - After a shocking drive on hole 7, Riki Elston (Levin) attempts a rock-skim.

Disc Golf New Zealand
Simple Yet Effective - Mike Proctor (Auckland) tees off having easily found the tee thanks to the simple yet wonderfully effective tee markers. Nice work Des.

Disc Golf New Zealand
That Tyred Look - The tyre on hole 18 could be a saviour or hinderer, depending on what happened to your disc. Here as Jymi Best (Everywhere) continues his superb round 3 52 the discs of Nigel Hailstone and AB sit safe from a couple of lengthy approach shots. They liked the tyre!

Disc Golf New Zealand
Oh the Pain - Auckland's Nick McKay watches in disbelief as yet another ballsy putt is spat out only to roll away. With TD Des Cooper's nasty pin placements, many golfers suffered similar fate. By Round 4 McKay was mocking his discs, daring them to twist the knife in his back.

Disc Golf New Zealand
The Winners - Congratulated by TD Des Cooper are (left to right) Jackson Sullivan [Levin, Open Champ], Simon Feasey [Auckland, Masters and Overall Champ] and Gemma Sullivan [Levin, Womens Champ]. Grand Master Champion Pete Boyle (Taumarunui) had to race off to a basketball game (yes, after 4 rounds of golf - and don't forget, Grand Masters is Over 50!!!)
