The 2008 Smokin' Mountain Disc Golf Tournament

Discovery Lodge, National Park, Taumarunui, New Zealand

We asked The Dev himself, Marty de Haas, to report on the weekend that was at Smokin' Mountain. After some lessons on how to read and write, this came through. Enjoy.

'It was all about the points.'

The final tour event retains its status as being one of the most important events as once again there were many people attending where finishing results are extremely important for those zeroing in for top 16 spots.

Saturday morning and the smiles and joking from the start set the tone for what was a brilliant weekend of golf at an unparrelled venue and a modified course by TD Des that truly makes fantastic use of the surrounding terrain.

Also up for grabs were the converted North Island Championship trophy not to mention the outstanding framed Arthur Pengelly photos of an erupting Ruepehu.

The format for the 15 men and 3 women was 3 rounds plus a super 6 so after Des handed out the guidelines ( nicely run event there Des) we set off in extremely cold but relatively calm condies that made any chance of getting birdies near impossible. So consistency was going to be the key.

An ensuing battle was going on between Baz, Andrew, the 2 Pauls and Des - all chasing points. The 2 G.M’s (Pete and Bob) cemented their places with both showing good form that saw them both make the top group.

Simon played his usual NZ Champion precision golf that saw him finish the Day with 2 rounds of 52 to take a comfortable 7 shot lead over Martin into Sunday. Robyn Joynt also played some great golf to have a handy lead in the Women’s Division.

Sunday brought us calm warm condies so it was a chance for everyone to get stuck in and make the most of it with once again a very relaxed vibe on the course and tons of smiles and bantering with Blair and Bruno also joining in on the fun.

By the way it was great to see a Wellington contingent of 3 players who came up with their partners and children . Events certainly are not the same without the colourful Capitaltonians there.

Well done Simon on another unused 50 pointer but the big ups have to go to Des and Robyn who both won their 1st ever tour division events and North Island trophies. I’m sure you're reminding Pete Boyle down at the Polo Cross course eh Des?

Can’t Wait to do it again!!!
